Back in 2020, John and Matine Yuksel were living in San Francisco—Matine was working at Apple, and John was an attorney. The Yuksel brothers decided to leave their careers in tech and law to make their father’s 40-year-old dream a reality.
When their dad, Edip, was a freshman at Turkey’s top university, he came up with the idea for a modular accelerating walkway to improve urban mobility. But his life changed when his brother was assassinated for leading a youth political organization. Edip dropped out of university and became a best-selling author. His words against the authoritarian government led to four years in a harsh Turkish prison.
After he was released, he moved to the U.S. to have the freedom of speech. He went to law school, met his wife, raised their two sons, and eventually became a college professor.
But Edip never got the chance to build his invention. So, now, that’s what the Yuksel brothers are doing with Beltways—bringing his vision to life.
Beltways’ modular, pit-less accelerating walkways install above ground with no need for construction or major building changes. They’re faster than traditional moving walkways—even faster than walking—and match the average speed of trams. The slower entry and exit points improve accessibility for all users without the tripping risk of comb plates. Energy use is reduced while simultaneously providing more efficient outcomes. Maintenance is quick and efficient thanks to a modular design and our internal software that monitors performance in real time.
Power requirements depend on the system length and top speed desired.
Beltways’ accelerating walkways are assembled module-by-module above ground, achieving any length desired, assuming adequate power distribution is provided for longer runs.
Traditional moving walkways often pose challenges for passengers with mobility issues due to sudden speed changes at entry and exit. At Beltways’ our accelerating walkways solve this with slower start and stop zones, improving accessibility for all users. The treadway is completely flush, removing tripping hazards caused by raised combs and allowing for a safer experience— even supporting wheelchairs and other wheeled devices. Clear, targeted safety messaging is displayed through ultra-wide LED floor panels at entry and exit points, enhancing user awareness and safety. At Beltways, our goal is to provide you with the most efficient transportation experience—designed with your safety at the heart of every detail.
Beltways is creating a new category of transportation called accelerating walkways.
